Santo Domingo Square and Tram to León
The proposal for the Urbanization of the Plaza de Santo Domingo in León, is based on the idea of installing the tram as it passes through the center. The square is currently one of the nerve centers of the city and the beginning of the wet neighborhood, so a new public space essentially pedestrian is projected, which on the one hand strengthens a new urban culture without a car, and also works more appropriately as a point of qualified meeting. The design of the square is developed from a geometric pattern as the basis of a tapestry for collective use that will pick up the pioneering stop of the tram in the city, a fountain, a system of vegetable pergolas and a series of kiosks and pieces of urban furniture.
The waiting marquee of the tram is the most relevant architectural element of the proposal, generated from the same geometric pattern that draws the square, ascending to formulate a pergola, or in this case roofing the stop and protect the pedestrian. This piece is equipped with an advanced technological system, and uses certain pieces to produce natural and artificial lighting effects, the same with one or another use according to the time slot, which make this element a recognizable symbol of the square. Lighting plays a no less important role in a square, which exists 24 hours a day; the system of artificial lighting serves the elements of the square, but also puts in value the buildings that turn to the square, where most buildings are of great beauty and importance in the city.
The project seeks the involvement of natural elements, the source of the five senses, the trees on the edge of the carpet and the fabrication in the workshop of the elements built are the bets for sustainability in the project.
