Levitation Pavilion
Prototype, 2010
Area: 530m2
PROJECT ARCHITECT: Gonzalo Rivas
PROJECT TEAM: Luis Berríos-Negrón
The project is conceived as a paten-shaped roof that rests upon a cylindrical enclosure made of glass panels and mullions, mysteriously emerging from the landscape. Poking over the perimetral railing, the pavilion’s floor appears some meters below, surrounded by an apparently insurmountable gap. A few steps backwards are enough to discover a curvilinear tunnel which leads to the tangent directrix of the moat which surrounds the glazed central space, revealing the enigmatically-floating figure inside. Wandering around this corridor, experiencing the reflections shed by the polished roof, becoming thrilled by the loss of references, exploring another echo, another light, witnessing a phenomenon that occurs before our eyes and remains unperishable when we are gone, are the aims of this elementary construction. The pavilion condenses the very primal concerns of architecture: sheltering, dialoguing with nature and providing a wide range of spatial experiences which shall remain etched in the visitors’ memories.
