The Residential Complex MISTRAL is part of EuroMed, a mixed-use development built in Marseille on the grounds of the old port in accordance with the Master Plan drafted by Yves Lion. The project develops the EcoCité concept following a well-settled urban scheme of a certain density in which the streets and green collective patios are equilibrated resulting in a massing in which the number of floors is reduced and the distances between them are increased in height so that all apartments benefit from long views, sunsets and sea breezes. Our project focuses on this ascending shape of the prism section and the diverse depths of the facades that create an essential element of the architectural approach: the loggias with which each living unit establishes a transitional space between the interior and the exterior. With this, we want living in EuroMed to offer the added value producing a feeling of belonging to an urban enclave in which the succession: bustling street life – leafy gardens – intimate loggia – collective rooftop terrace – is the great architectural argument for making the act of living here a contemporary experience, deeply involved in urban culture and environmental sensitivity at the same time. As a social experiment, the project proposes the coexistence of social housing and other free-market housing. This strategy, which already implemented in other residential projects by estudio Herreros, constitutes a manifesto against the differences invented by the prejudices that hinder the opportunities that many need. But the most important thing is how much these objectives are achieved with design decisions such as the profusion of gardens and collective terraces with recreational and agricultural programs that encourage the meeting of children and adults; and a system of accesses that stage the belonging of the complex to the contemporary urban culture through a materiality that suggests that the city enters the buildings. As a constructive experiment, it should be noted the use of an industrial materiality of elementary technical systems. The key piece of this approach is the implementation of a façade of light panels easy to manipulate by the users and generating a sequence of intermediate spaces that form a sort of parallel open-air housing that Covid-19 has put in value in an unexpected way. The loggias + façade ensemble turns each dwelling into a device for negotiating the meteorological conditions typical of Mediterranean cities that oscillate from mild to stormy weather including the strong mistral winds demanding protection and lending the project takes its name, giving it an essential value in the construction of the urban landscape and the local culture of Marseille.
