Fatcomplexhybrid of high programmatic density is an investigation project that pretends to research the techniques –models and methods– of how we think and develop large urban projects that aim to re-locate the gravity centers of our cities. We imagine a new generation of big complexes of housing, comerce, offices, services and parking that can take an infrastructural role for consolidated neighbourhoods with a significant sphere of influence inserted in the urban culture as warranties of success to finally supply a mix of innovation and . It is understood that they will be completed with a big portion of equipped public space inscribed of unique character.
Besides the trivialization of the typical programs, they impose a revision in the light of recent changes rooted in cultural, social, technological and economic context of our cities. We intend to work with the «fuzzy» sectors of the evident programs. Those in which you can discover a fusion that no longer permits a clear separation: working versus living, culture versus commerce, leisure and sport versus a new health and human body reading, learning and new technologies versus spectacle and information, are not anymore easy to separate. All these activities mixed, hybrid in new architectural typologies can stimulate a renovation of the urban environments which disorganized and uncontrolled growth has produced.
Some premises can be set right from the start: enrich the monothematic programs with other complementary uses until the limits of capacity of the enclave and its context; development with true environmental requirements and goals; intensify with the presence of nature beyond the obvious; work on the hybridization of public and private programs, exploring new forms of living and domestic space, work and working environment, leisure and socialization…; fight for a critical elimination of clichés of sociological stereotypes… etc. The way in which we can achieve an effort as proposed here, imposes to rethink some of the parameters that most strongly contributed to the construction of the city we know: Program and Organization, Obsolescence and Flexibility, Production and Consumption, Typology and Clichés, Technology and Sustainability…
The north side of Vuorimiehentie Street, called Mountain Man Block (‘Vuorimiehen kortteli’ in Finnish; zone ‘e’ on the map). The site locates adjacent to a new metro station. Aalto University Properties owns most of the area. Certain parts belong to Senate State Properties and there is an agreement amongst the land owners to let AUP develop plans for the area. AUP is owned by Aalto University. There is useful material available for the basis of the task commissioned by AUP and the university, for example the consultations made by architecture bureau A-konsultit and a diploma work by architecture student Aku Jokinen.
PRELIMINARY SPATIAL PROGRAM
– Student centre 5.000 m2 for the university student unions AYY (Aalto University Student Union), TF (Teknologföreningen, the Swedish Speaking Technology Students’ Union), KY (The Business School Student Union) and TOKYO (The Art and Design Student Union). The premises will be financed by the student unions.
– Commercial space app. 10.000 m2, complementing the services offered by the new shopping centre by the metro station, possibly partly financed by the student unions and external players.
– Workspaces app. 15.000 m2, meant for the collaborators of the university in both R&D and generic office activities for private companies and partnering institutions.
– Housing app. 20.000 m2, especially at the western end of the block.
– Underground parking garage, serving the centre of the campus in general.
– The elaboration of the program as part of the design process. The hybridization of programs and their typological consequences.
– The relation of the construction systems with the different programs and their instability in the time. Technical culture; material culture and environmental concerns as part of the design process.
– The definitions of the ways of living and their architectural opportunities.
– The design of the domestic space with a special focus in the types of apartments. From the structure to the furniture as part of the project.
– Urban and landscape integration of the building/s, especially as part of the university campus.
