Innovation Labs + Students center and residence
The multidisciplinary and activist student’s unions are one of the most significant windows to show the spirit of the university culture to the society. The STUDENT RESIDENCES AND UNIONS CENTRE is configured as a two-floor podium of collective uses that reinforces the urban spirit of the site on which the residential wing will be built facing south and west, in order to capture maximum sunlight, and exploiting the views we see in other of the project’s raised buildings. The transparent ground floors, whose programs will be able of changing in the future, reveal the open collective spirit that characterises the project as a whole.
Adjacent to the student’s center, we set out to re-configure and extend the existing Material Science and Engineering Building of the Aalto University in Otaniemi to accommodate the new Bionova Science Building, an innovative complex of various programs, shared by different groups of people and visitors. This plan follows the pattern established in the Student Centre regarding the configuration of the podium and raised wings, adding new collective spaces to the system of public spaces and in relation to the transparency of the ground floors, converted into display windows of unpredictable programs for an open spirit that embraces single knowledge across the world. Nonetheless, Bionova adds the variable of dialogue with the existing building in the quest for a new architectural entity, an advanced model entity that accepts the past as work material in an interplay similar to the one in which the historical ingredients of the landscape stand side-by-side with new public space and architecture concepts.
