estudio Herreros and housing

Juan Herreros has undertaken intense activities connected with the topic of housing. He gained his Doctorate in Architecture with a Thesis on the Contemporary Domestic Space and has directed courses and workshops on recent mutations in the matter of housing, applying from a purely theoretical to the most ideological and creative approach. He directed during its nine editions the module on “New Forms of Domesticity” of the Master of Collective Housing’s Degree Course at the School of Architecture of Madrid and was also a member of its scientific committee. He has participated in research for the Institut de la Construcció de Catalunya (Construction Institute of Catalonia), the Mies van der Rohe Foundation/Ministry of Housing (APTM), and has developed lines of experimental prototypes such as the AH Houses for TDM and the prototypes 10pointX with Eurobox. Texts such as “Todos Nómadas” (All Nomads), “El Hombre y sus Cosas” (Man and his Things), “El Espacio Doméstico como Sistema de Objetos” (The Domestic Space as a System of Objects), “De la Casa a la Ciudad” (From the House to the City), “Tres Referencias: Eames, Smithsons, Price” (Three Benchmarks: Eames, Smithsons, Price), as well as his book “Vivienda y Espacio Doméstico en el Siglo XXI” (Housing and the Domestic Space in the 21st Century) are some of his contributions.

Associated with Iñaki Ábalos, he designed and built public communal housing projects in Madrid (M-30/EMV) (Madrid Community Quality Prize to Healthy Housing 1997), Palencia (Parque Europa), Vitoria (Bioclimatic Housing in Salburúa) (AVS Euskadi Prize to the best housing work 2009) and private housing in Las Palmas (Woermann Tower) (7th Solutia International Design Award 2005), Valencia (Solar Tower in Sociópilis), as well as different family houses.

Among his clients are the artist Luis Gordillo and the journalists Alejandro Gómez Lavilla and Marina Collazo. The House for the Gallerist Pepe Cobo in Majorca, which was shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe Awards 2009, and the 10.1 industrialized prototype whose earliest installation was undertaken in June 2010 in the municipality of Garoza (Ávila, Spain) for the graphic designer Rafa Celda and the illustrator Hoa Melgar, shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe Awards 2010, the Bienal de Arquitectura Española 2012, and awarded by Construmat Prize 2011.

In 2009, Herreros Arquitectos won the International Competition for designing and building 110 dwellings in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona) promoted by IMPSOL, and the competition for the residential, commercial and office complex in Bjorvika (Oslo). In 2013 the office also won thecompetition for a residential plot in Euromed (Marsella) and ANFA (Casablanca), all of this projects are being developed nowadays as well as the project for the residential areas of the master plan of the Bjorvika district in Oslo, the result of the international competition for the “Munch Area”.
